Today has been a very busy day.  I don’t think I took a break except to eat lunch.  Today we started working on our second bedroom.  We have been in our home for years and we still have yet to make more out of second bedroom than just a storage room.  We are now in the process of ripping up carpet and getting it ready to create a guest bedroom/office.  God I hope we don’t give up this time and the vision becomes fruition.  So, after we packaged up a library load of books, we drove them to Goodwill.  So we did something “good” and guess what?  On the way home we stopped in a tile store and they had a better tile that we liked for the bathroom and it was the same price!!  Now I’m excited. ~ But we will leave bathroom talk for when we really get started.  OK, so you are probably hear to read about my Champagne~Savarin cake.  I found the recipe via Chowhound at BakingBites.

I blog the good, bad and the ugly…..

This is my first time using a recipe where you need yeast.  So excited to watch it rise.  I think I will need to make this more than once to get it just right.    BakingBites, uses  Champagne I used rum.  For full details on how to make the cake please click here!

Where it went wrong.  So I let the cake cool, when I attempt to remove it from the pan this is what happened.  Oh yeah….

And then again…..

Problems:  I think I sprayed the pan with too much of the baking spray.  I got a little carried away.  I also think 1 cup of rum was just too much.  My taste tester does not think they could drive after eating a slice.  Joking but almost true!   If you make this cake please leave a comment for me and let me know what you do.  I think I may have just rushed it.  If I ever try this again, the cake is staying in the pan over night.  Pluses: Very moist, it had a nice sweet taste, but not overly sweet, Taste Tester Review:  “It was good….”  I will take that because after this nightmare, I thought the verdict would be worst.  Should I just stick to cupcakes???  Ugh!

Champagne Rum  Savarin
2 cups all purpose flour
1 tbsp active dry yeast
3 tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
2/3 cup milk, warm (100-110F) (I did not check the temp, I heated milk in the microwave)
6 tbsp butter, very soft
3 large eggs

Champagne Rum  Soaking Syrup
3/4 cup water
1 cup sugar
1 cup champagne or prosecco Rum
1/2 tsp vanilla extract, optional

OK, this is super embarrassing  but my cabinet was a mess.  Tupperware, Glad-ware,  Take Alongs, and Ziploc containers all over the place.  Oh yeah and let’s not forget the containers that I reuse from the Chinese restaurant.  So I was inspired when I started reading the posts on organizing over at Sherbert Blossom.  So of course I had to start with the scary cabinet that throws containers at me every time I open the doors.  Here are my before and afters.  I did this after work and it took me less than an hour.  Why have I been sitting on this for so long???  I feel so much better, out with the clutter.  I hope I can keep this up, I think blogging about it will give me the extra kick in the butt I need to do this through out my entire home.

I love Top Chef, why must it come on at 10 pm???  Anywho, the right person went home last night.  I think Amber had great skills when it comes to developing flavor in her food, but she misses the little things, like keeping your tuna tarta looking fresh!

Ok, so now who do I love, Tiffany, love her and I want to eat what she cooks so bad!   Ed, is too cute and funny, and I think he knows what’s up in the kitchen.  I would have loved for him and Tiffany to hook-up, but they have love at home.  Kevin, I have to like him, he is from NJ and if he does nothing else right, he keeps it real!  He brings NJ to DC Top Chef, I love it. (fight fight fight) lol  I want to like Kelly Liken, I just don’t.  She seems to be full of herself at times, and I saw her on Iron Chef.  Iron Chef to Top Chef, I don’t know I feel like she has a leg up on some of the other folks.  Now for Angelo…..annoying, was full of himself, now he is a mess.  Also, can we cut the crap with the Russian”beard”!!!  What is his story???  Can he cook?  For sure!  Is he likeable, not to me.    I can’t wait to see who goes next week, in my mind it needs to be my NJ guy. 😦    I am thinking Tiffany is going to take it home and win against Ed!  Oh that would be awesome!!

My Crate & Barrel/Ikea Dining Room

We started out with a dining room that was awful and it has been through many changes, and there are still many to come.  I only have the first and third phase in photos.  The second phase was a very old fashioned table and really too much for us.  It took up too much room.

We have now tried to make it a little more modern.  We know there is a lot more we can do, but it is by far one of our most favorite rooms in the house!

Dining Room Before (About 4.5 years ago)

Our main piece of furniture is the cabinet that we purchased from Ikea.  We love it!  It has a wine rack inside and it holds so much.  Our table and chairs are from Crate and Barrel.  The side furniture is from West Elm.  That piece we decorate really nice when we entertain!(Not Pictured)

The Ikea piece is  a 3 row cabinet.  I have only posted some of it, because it is full of family photos.

Here are few photos of other pieces in the room.  I have left out a couple of other prints.  I will post those at another time.  We also have no idea of the paint color that we used and our next upgrade is to change the floor to a darker color.  We are over the light floors.

Coasters are from Pier 1 and the nature artwork is from Target.  The light was purchased at a local light store.

So there you have it, that is our dining room.  It has come a long way, this is phase 3!  We are eventually going to upgrade the floor to a darker color when we change the floors in the rest of the home and change the light.  I think it is too small. 😦

Now for my favorite my part, my little rug that I found at Target!  I love rugs and yes, I had to have one in the dining room as well.  I am not sure if that is outdated or not, but I love it!

A Baking Night

After a long day at work I had a taste for some chocolate.  So I decided to make the Martha Stewart Double Chocolate Brownies.

* 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more for pan
* 6 ounces coarsely chopped good-quality semisweet chocolate
* 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (not Dutch-process)
* 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
* 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
* 1/4 teaspoon salt
* 1 cup sugar
* 2 large eggs
* 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract(I only use nielsen massey vanilla, you can purchase it at Williams- Sonoma)

The only Vanilla I will use

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a buttered 8-inch square baking pan with foil or parchment paper, allowing 2 inches to hang over sides. Butter lining (excluding overhang); set pan aside.
  2. Put butter, chocolate, and cocoa in a heatproof medium bowl set over a pan of simmering water; stir until butter and chocolate are melted. Let cool slightly.
  3. Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl; set aside.
  4. Put sugar, eggs, and vanilla in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, and beat on medium speed until pale, about 4 minutes. Add chocolate mixture; beat until combined. Add flour mixture; beat, scraping down sides of bowl, until well incorporated.
  5. Pour batter into prepared pan; smooth top with a rubber spatula. Bake until a cake tester inserted into brownies (avoid center and edges) comes out with a few crumbs but is not wet, about 35 minutes. Let cool slightly in pan, about 15 minutes. Lift out brownies; let cool completely on a wire rack before cutting into squares.

I did not like using the parchment paper with this recipe.  I found it very hard to smooth out my brownie mix on the parchment.

I think I may have overcooked this brownie a little bit.  Next time I make them I will be sure to pull them out at the 35 min mark!  Overall very tasty and rich!

A Trip to Lowes

Well tonight we went to Lowe’s to take another look at what we are going to do in our bathroom.  We have agreed that we want the bathroom to look nice, be mold free, and fresh!  So, we are going to do this and not spend a lot of money.

So far we have picked out the tile for the floor and the vanity.

I love the way the dark wood looks against this tile.  The photo does not do it justice.

On Suite Bathroom ~ Update!

We have been going back and forth forever on the right time to redo the bathroom.  As it stands now, we don’t have enough to redo the kitchen, so we are getting the bathroom done!  Very exciting!  We are not doing anything fancy,

this is just going to be a Lowes/Home Depot job.  I will post photos later.

The bathroom will be gutted.  We are now deciding on the accent color, we are going to go with blue(my favorite color) or green.  I have been so inspired by Young House Love.  That we are going to attempt to go with light colors.  This is

something we don’t usually do.  We usually go with dark colors on the walls.  But we need to open our place up and if we ever decide to sell, I want the buyer to be able to see all of the space.  With all that said, I have been looking at some very light paint colors.

Oh yeah, we are also going to paint the ceiling, we have never done this before!  My other rooms have the awful popcorn ceiling 😦    Please come back and check often because I am really going to document this new look!!  Exciting times…..

Glidden VS Behr:  We usually go with Behr or Benjamin Moore, but we are trying to save money and I see people are using Glidden and it looks great.  Was I wrong for thinking that Glidden is the economy paint? Or does it really not matter?

True Blood *Spoiler Alert*

As much as I love True Blood, is as much as I can’t stand Bill and Sookie!  Sookie just gets on my nerves and to find out she is a*SPOILER*

silly Fairy!!  I can’t believe it.  When Sookie said that was lame, that was about the only thing I agree with her on. Really, a fairy????  Come on, can’t we do better than that.  Sookie better do what she can to save my man, Eric.

Ok, and why oh why must we give Tara more drama and tell her that Jason shot Eggs!!  Is that needed, poor thing, but she is a great actress!

My love!  Eric, he can do no wrong, I don’t care what he does.  Sookie is a fool if she does not let Eric do whatever it is he needs to do!!!  I would go straight for Eric, I’m just saying…..
